What is the meaning of One Sound?
At One Sound we believe that music is a gift and is expressed uniquely all around the world. After spending four years in China, teaching and performing with artists of Chinese classical music, I fell in love with their sound and long, enduring musical heritage. Being exposed to this musical environment firsthand I felt I was hearing a heart cry echoing back to me from ages ago. Moreover, it was like receiving an invitation to understand the Chinese people in a deeper way, through their music. Within each person’s heart lives also, such a song, unique to who they are.
At One Sound we believe the teacher’s role is to unveil their student’s “song,” and identify their potential and equip them with the training and tools to give it expression. Each musical gift, regardless apparent size, is part and parcel of a larger, global spectrum of sound. Collaged together it reveals the Divine fingerprint, a richer picture of humanity and our responsibility to call out the “song” in each other. When resounding together, it identifies one
original purpose and design and harkens us to the sound of heaven.
Here, preserved and recorded in the historical archives of an ancient people, is one sound formed out of many. It is from here that our school’s name is derived. "It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying,
For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever:
that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;"
2 Chronicles 5:13 (ca.450 BC)
